Former Cumhuriyet Daily writers and executives Güray Öz, Musa Kart, Hakan Kara, Önder Çelik, Mustafa Kemal Güngör and Emre İper left 100 days behind in prison. The writers and executives are arrested within the Cumhuriyet Daily Case, despite the announcement of Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül that those receiving imprisonment sentences that are shorter than five years will have the possibility of appealing the verdict and that the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Cassation claimed the reversal of all convictions issued in the Cumhuriyet Case, where journalism was prosecuted.
As a result of the hearing at Istanbul 27th Assize Court, various imprisonment sentences were issued against former writers and workers of the newspaper. Files of the names receiving imprisonment sentences for longer than five years were carried to the Court of Cassation for appeal. The verdicts against eight people, who received sentences shorter than five years were approved on February 19th by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of Istanbul Regional (Appeal) Court. Six names were thus imprisoned on April 25th.
