Teachers, students, and citizens who gathered in Mersin at the call of Eğitim-Sen sought to organize a march on April 18 to protest attacks on schools. The police blocked the march by setting up barricades in Yenişehir. The protesters voiced their opposition by chanting slogans, then marched in pairs to the Provincial Directorate of National Education and demanded the resignation of Minister Yusuf Tekin.
