Three journalists arrested and nine journalists face lawsuits in June

The pressure against journalists continued in June as well. According to the data compiled by Gazetekarınca, three media workers were arrested within the one-month period; investigations against nine journalists have turned into lawsuits. Three journalists were sentenced to 105 days of imprisonment in total due to their columns. At least three journalists were taken into custody; three arrested journalists were released.

 

According to the data shared by Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul former MP and CHP Media Committee member Barış Yarkadaş, there were 182 journalists in prison. Access bans were brought against one column and one news article; the related article was deleted from 26 news websites. Four newspapers and one TV channel faced censorship; the screening of one movie was banned. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader launched an advertisement, targeting the journalists who have criticized him and his party during the electoral campaigns. Criminal organization leader Alaattin Çakıcı threatened seven journalists. Press workers were attacked in Suruç district of Urfa on the day of elections.
