Diyarbakır 7th Assize Court sentenced former Azadiya Welat Editor-In-Chief Ismail Çoban to five years of imprisonment due to ‘making illegal organization propaganda’ with 15 news articles and columns published on the newspaper in 2013. Azadiya Welat newspaper was previous shut down with an emergency decree and Çoban was arrested. The expressions, “Kurdish People’s Leader” and “PKK leader” referring to Abdullah Öcalan, as well as other expressions like “martyr” referring to PKK members dying in clashes and “guerilla” referring to the members used in the articles were shown as evidence to the crime.
