The Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into Yeni Parti Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik and Üsküdar founding district chair Berk Tütüncü on charges of “threats” and “blackmail.” The investigation was opened after three members of the Üsküdar Municipal Council filed complaints alleging that they had been subjected to threats, insults and pressure ahead of the deputy mayor election held on 8 September. A day earlier, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched a separate investigation over Çelik’s statements alleging pressure on Üsküdar Municipal Council members who switched from the CHP to the AKP and had summoned Çelik to give a statement as a suspect.
