Lawyer Elifnur G. was detained in an investigation by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into Menderes Municipality. Prosecutors alleged that sexually explicit WhatsApp messages existed between Elifnur G. and jailed Mayor İlkay Çiçek and that the lawyer had been placed near Çiçek by the Kuruçaylar criminal organization. Earlier in the investigation, detention orders had been issued for 16 people, including İlkay Çiçek; 15 people were detained and 10 were arrested. The investigation was conducted on charges of “establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes,” “membership in an organization,” “bribery,” “extortion,” “forgery of official documents,” “misconduct in office” and “causing zoning pollution.”
