Transsexual prisoner Buse is on a hunger strike for 31 days after not being able to obtain a permission for a gender transformation surgery despite a court decree and a medical report. Buse is a life imprisonment convict kept at Tekirdağ Type-F Closed Prison No.2 and she can’t be transferred to a women’s prison due to her incomplete gender transformation process; sharing the same ward with another transsexual prisoner Diren Coşkun at the men’s prison.
In their statement at Human Rights Association (IHD), Buse’s friends demanded from the Ministry of Justice to immediately provide the administrative actions necessary within the right to medical access, which is a basic human right, and to end the arbitrary attitude on the matter. “Buse does not comply with the definition of ‘normal’ defined by the government. That’s why her surgery is being prevented despite all necessary legal and legislative processes were completed. However, there is no ‘normal’, there is conscience. Normal is defined by each individual,” stated Atty. Eren Keskin.
