Students who participated in a protest against allegations that Research Assistant Dr. A.A. of the Philosophy Department at Kocaeli University had harassed students are facing disciplinary proceedings. The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Literature summoned the students to defend themselves on October 20, accusing them of “disrupting disciplinary order.” The students criticized the university for targeting them rather than addressing the harassment allegations.
Lawyer Umutcan Tarcan requested the investigation be canceled, stating it violated freedom of expression. The Kocaeli Branch of Education-Sen announced that both the university and the union were investigating Dr. A.A., and that his membership would be suspended if the allegations were confirmed.
