The Ministry of Health has not announced the results of the study it conducted between 2011 and 2016; and food engineer Bülent Şık has published the study he was a part of. The 15-month imprisonment sentence issued against Şık, effective immediately, was reversed by the 13th Criminal Chamber of Istanbul Regional Court – the court decided that the documents published by Şık were not confidential in nature.
The results of the study, “The Evaluation on the Effects of Environmental Factors on Health in Kocaeli, Antalya, Tekirdağ, Edirne and Kırklareli” that was conducted with the support of the Ministry have not been launched by the Ministry and the information announced by Bülent Şık has revealed that there was a toxic waste accumulation in Ergene Basin, which threatened public health. Istanbul 2nd Assize Court has afterwards prosecuted Şık with a 12-year imprisonment claim due to “disclosure of duty-related secret”, “obtaining and disclosing prohibited confidential information” and has sentenced him to 15 months of imprisonment, effective immediately.
