The second hearing of the criminal case against Istanbul Bar Association President Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özden Kaboğlu and members of the executive board was held today at the Silivri Prison compound.
Before the hearing, Kaboğlu and the executive board of the bar association were kept waiting at the gate for more than an hour, which drew reaction.
The bar association executives face up to 12 years in prison on charges of “terrorist propaganda through the press and broadcasting” and “publicly disseminating misleading information”.
Erinç Sağkan, President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations, many bar association presidents, representatives of international legal organizations and lawyers attended the hearing.
Kaboğlu requested that the trial be moved to Istanbul’s Çağlayan Courthouse and that the file be taken to the Constitutional Court, but the court rejected these requests.
The lawyers emphasized that holding the trial in Silivri is unconstitutional.
The hearing was adjourned until September 10 at 10:00 am.
Kaboğlu said, “Violations of the law continue during this trial. But as the Istanbul Bar Association, we will continue to defend the case on legal grounds.”
