BirGün TV faced a 72-hour deadline to apply for a license from RTÜK after it started its new broadcasting period on September 1.
RTÜK decided unanimously that BirGün TV, which broadcasts on YouTube, must obtain a license. If the application is not made within 72 hours, an access ban will be requested.
Opposition members of RTÜK reacted to the decision. CHP member İlhan Taşcı said critical broadcasters were being targeted. Tuncay Keser, a member of the Supreme Council, stated that the application was selective with the expression “Choose and force a license”. Necdet İpekyüz of the DEM Party emphasized that equality and pluralism should be observed.
Criticism has focused on RTÜK’s suppression of independent broadcasting through licensing and content control.
