According to the report published by MFRR, in the first half of 2025, there were 709 press freedom violations in EU and candidate countries. In Turkey, 157 journalists were affected with 64 violations. Most of the cases involved detentions, trials and arrests. The report highlighted the crisis in Serbia, the spread of “foreign agent” laws in Europe, and police brutality against journalists in Turkey and RTÜK crackdowns. There are 17 journalists in prison in Turkey.
