Press Freedom Report by CHP: Access Bans and Censorship Increased

According to CHP’s May 2025 Press Freedom Report, the biggest threat to freedom of expression and press freedom was “access blocking”. While the X account of arrested IBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and many news content were blocked, censorship powers were further expanded with the 10th Judicial Package. CHP’s Utku Çakırözer said that the regulations canceled by the Constitutional Court were brought back to the Parliament as “zombie articles”. In May, journalists appeared before judges 90 times, some were arrested or punished. RTÜK imposed heavy fines on opposition TV channels. New sanctions to further restrict freedom of expression on Parliament’s agenda
