Erzurum Regional Administrative Court found the 15-day ban on demonstrations and events imposed by the Van Governorate due to the trustee protests unlawful. The decision emphasized that the governorate cannot issue a general ban covering all kinds of protests and events across the province.
The ban was imposed following protests that started after the March 31, 2024 elections, when Abdullah Zeydan was elected as a trustee of the AKP, despite the fact that he had been elected. Van 4th Administrative Court upheld the ban, but upon an appeal by lawyers, Erzurum Court of Appeal ruled that the ban lacked legal basis.
The court said that only a specific gathering could be banned, while a blanket ban violated constitutional rights. Lawyer Mahmut Kaçan said the ruling sets a precedent for similar bans.
