Muhammet Hanifi Zengin, known for his harsh interventions against journalists and LGBTI+ individuals, has been appointed as Istanbul Deputy Provincial Police Chief. It is known that Zengin had previously served as Istanbul Security Branch Manager and his threats against journalists during protests were caught on camera many times.
Within the scope of the summer 2025 appointments made by the Istanbul Governor’s Office, changes were made in many senior police positions. It was also revealed that Zengin had previously been assigned as Başakşehir District Police Chief, but was removed from this position.
