The police intervened against students protesting against the event to be attended by theologian Nurettin Yıldız at Boğaziçi University. Yıldız had previously attracted reaction with his statements that “marriage is permissible at the age of six”.
Boğaziçi University Islamic Studies Club (BISAK) organized an event titled “Islamic Sciences: For Whom, How Much?”, organized by the Boğaziçi University Islamic Studies Club (BİSAK), sparked a reaction from university students. Students from the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) wrote “No passage to fascism and sharia” on the club’s door, while a similar banner was hung on the school building.
Police entered the university’s north campus during the event and intervened against the protesting students. Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) announced that T24 reporter Can Öztürk was detained.
TİP students announced on social media that one of their friends was beaten and taken out of the hall.
In past statements, Nurettin Yıldız had defended marriage at the age of six and claimed that a man and a woman being alone in an elevator constituted “halvet”. These statements drew a great reaction from the public.
