Eğitim-iş wanted to march from the Ministry of Education to Parliament to protest the Ministry’s budget being discussed in the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s Planning and Budget Committee and to draw attention to problems in the education system. Police intervened a second time against the educators who wanted to march. Speaking at the barricade, Eğitim-iş President Kadem Özbay condemned police violence, emphasizing that education had been placed on the shoulders of parents, that schools’ basic needs were not being met, and that teachers were fighting for the future of children. Responding to the police intervention, Özbay said, “This system will be destroyed. We will continue to fight for an equal and democratic country that our children deserve.” CHP Çorum Deputy Mehmet Tahtasız also reacted to the police intervention, stating that the teachers’ demands were legitimate. Earlier in the day, Eğitim-iş’s march to Parliament was blocked by police for the first time, and union members staged a sit-in.
