Businessman Osman Kavala is under arrest within the Gezi Park protest for 643 days. Known with his Civil Society studies, Kavala was detained on October 9, 2017 in Gaziantep. He was later taken to the Provincial Security Directorate in Istanbul. The reason for Kavala’s detainment couldn’t be found out initially, due to the investigation being confidential. Kavala was arrested on November 1st and put in Silivri Prison.

The businessman’s arrest was based on two reasons: “Attempting to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey” and “attempting to overthrow the Constitutional order.” The investigation against Kavala, who is described as “The Soros of Turkey” by President Tayyip Erdoğan, was extended and new operations were conducted. The indictment against Kavala, on the other hand, was prepared on February 20th, on the 477th day of his arrest. In the first hearing on June 24th in Silivri, 16 rights advocates were prosecuted; arrested defendant Yiğit Aksakoğlu was released. The release claim for Kavala was denied in the second hearing as well, that was held on July 18th.
