In an interview with DW Turkish, businessman Osman Kavala, who has been imprisoned in Silivri Prison for eight years, said, “After the President criticized the acquittal decision, the judicial process turned into an arbitrary punishment activity, the law went off the rails.” Detained on October 18, 2017 and arrested on November 1, 2017, Kavala was acquitted in the Gezi trial in 2020 and re-arrested the same day on another case. His detention continues despite an ECHR ruling that he “must be released immediately”. Kavala also criticized the Council of Europe’s failure to take concrete steps for three years, saying, “This not only undermines my freedom, but also the binding nature of the European legal system.”
