Two different prosecutors’ offices issued conflicting decisions regarding BirGün reporter İsmail Arı’s story about RTÜK and its former chairman Ebubekir Şahin. On October 17, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the complaint, ruling it as “journalistic activity.” However, on November 27, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against Arı on charges of “insulting a public official, slander, and spreading misleading information.” The first hearing of the case, in which Arı faces up to nine years in prison, will be held on June 9, 2026.
