Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP) members Coşkun Arslan, Mahir Can Torunoğlu and Umur Çümen stood trial in the first hearing of the lawsuit filed against them at Sakarya 2nd Assize Court after their custody and arrest in March. The court issued the release of the three defendants with judicial measures, as well as a ban on travelling abroad.
An investigation had started against the three names on March 8th due to hanging posters inside a university in Sakarya on March 8th with the charges of ‘illegal organization membership’ and ‘making illegal organization propaganda.’ The indictment prepared against them showed posters of Mahir Çayan and Deniz Gezmiş, as well as some books as ‘evidence’ for these charges.
“The largest section of the file is the March 30 commemorations, photographs of Mahir Çayan, Deniz Gezmiş, İbrahim Kaypakkaya as well as other old magazines and books. As lawyers, what we see is that there is no document or allegation in the file that could be bases for crime,” defendant lawyer Sema Özdemir stated.
