The police intervened against students protesting against theologian Nureddin Yıldız, who attended an event organized by the Islamic Research Club at Boğaziçi University. Istanbul Governorate announced that 97 people, 39 women and 58 men, were detained as a result of the incidents. The governorate also announced that 13 police officers were slightly injured.

Reacting to the protests, Eğitim Sen said, “University students are detained in handcuffs for expressing their thoughts, while those who legitimize child abuse are given space at the university.” The union stated that the event was not approved and many student clubs objected.

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik also announced that they are following the process for the detained students. Eğitim Sen and various university components emphasized that the detentions were unlawful and that those responsible should be immediately investigated.
