MKG August report: Threats, pressure, detention continued

Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) announced its August 2025 report. According to the report, women journalists were silenced through threats, judicial harassment, economic pressure and digital censorship.

According to the report, one female journalist was threatened, one journalist was handcuffed electronically, 13 press workers were fired and eight websites were blocked. It was emphasized that in Şırnak, MA reporter Zeynep Durgut was prevented from following the news by the police and journalist Rahime Karvar was handcuffed electronically.

The Constitutional Court’s ruling for JINNEWS News Director Öznur Değer and journalist Dicle Müftüoğlu was found “insufficient in terms of freedom of expression”. In digital censorship, access to the accounts of Yeni Yaşam, Xwebûn, Ajansa Welat, Kaos GL and ETHA was blocked.

The report also cited the dismissal of 13 press workers at Nefes newspaper and the suspension of advertisement rights of eight local newspapers by the Press Advertisement Agency as examples of economic pressure.

MKG called for impartial judicial processes, the abolition of digital censorship and the release of imprisoned journalists. The report stated that five women journalists are still in prison.
