Cartoonist Doğan Pehlevan, who had been detained for approximately five months due to a cartoon published in LeMan magazine, was released at the second hearing of his trial on charges of “insulting the president” at Istanbul’s 36th Criminal Court of First Instance. Four days earlier, Pehlevan was also released at the first hearing of his trial on charges of “publicly inciting the people to hatred and hostility,” but he could not leave prison because he was detained on other charges. During the hearing, Pehlevan stated that he did not have an X account, that the tweets shown were not his, and that he had never been involved in a defamation case before. The prosecutor requested that he remain in custody, but the judge granted his release on condition that he not leave the country and sign in once a week. The next hearing will be held on March 24.
