Lawsuit against theologist-writer Cemil Kılıç due to social media posts

Gaziosmanpaşa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office created an indictment against theologist-writer Cemil Kılıç due to “public denigration of a part of society based on social class, race, religion, sect, gender or regional difference.” An imprisonment claim was made against Kılıç from 6 months up to one year due to two social media posts on December 6 and December 11, 2018 in which he is criticising Islamism.

In his post on December 6, 2018, Kılıç stated, “Our beloved prophet Muhammad is saying that religion is good morality! However, we see that now all religious people are immoral.” In his post on December 12, 2018, Kılıç wrote, “I’m saying this as a theologist that history has not seen a community with more thievery, fraud, lies and ignorance than the Islamists in Turkey.”

In the statement he gave to the Prosecutor’s Office within the file, Kılıç has stated, “I don’t think that my posts are elements of crime. They are within freedom of expression. I did not criticise Muslims, I criticised Islamists.” The thologist-writer was also dismissed from his job at Rami Atatürk Anatolian High School in January due to his social media posts.
