Ministry of Health dismissed medical doctor Ali Sarıtepe from public service due to a social media post he made in 2016 after 23 years of experience as a family general practitioner in Istanbul. The Ministry accused the doctor of “acting in infamous and shameful ways that would not comply with public service” and made a criminal complaint against Sarıtepe.
Following the complaint, a lawsuit was filed against Sarıtepe due to sharing one visual on Facebook, which allegedly belonged to the last Ottoman sultan Mehmed VI with the quote, “Turks are a group of mixed ignorants without a clear religion, race or land.” In the indictment prepared, Sarıtepe was charged with “publicly denigrating the Turkish Nation, the Republic of Turkey and the GNAT.” The first hearing of the case will be held at Büyükçekmece Criminal Court of First Instance on May 25.
