Former AK Party İzmir Deputy Hüseyin Kocabıyık was sentenced to 2 years, 2 months, and 5 days in prison in a case where he was tried on charges of “insulting the President” and “defamation.” The Istanbul 46th Criminal Court ruled that Kocabıyık’s interview with Cumhuriyet newspaper and his social media posts constituted the crime of insult. The court ordered Kocabıyık’s release along with the verdict. In his defense, Kocabıyık said his criticisms fell within the scope of freedom of expression.
