Judges of the 17th and 28th Criminal Courts of First Instance who ordered the release of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality case were appointed as members of the heavy criminal court by the Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK) on August 8, 2025. The Judges’ Union stated that this change undermines the perception of judicial independence and made a statement: “Authority arrangements cannot serve the instrumentalization of the judiciary.” The union emphasized that the decision is incompatible with the Constitution and international law.
