Indefinite house arrest was ordered for 4 people, including journalist Oğuz Bakır and lawyer Eren Doğru, who were detained for sharing CHP Chair Özgür Özel’s remarks on social media against a prosecutor conducting the IBB investigation.
The detainees were referred to the Criminal Judicature of Peace on charges of “insulting a public official”, “publicly spreading misleading information” and “slander”. The court ordered house arrest for all of them.
The process that started after Özgür Özel’s statement brought the debates on freedom of press and freedom of expression to the agenda again with the house arrest decision given for his social media posts.
