Presidential Spokesman İbrahim Kalın stated that artists Metin Akpınar and Müjdat Gezen, who were targeted and faced an investigation following their expressions at a TV show they participated as guests, had committed crimes. Kalın described the crime as “expressions criticizing the current government in Turkey, the administration and our President.”
The artists joined the show, “Public Arena,” on Halk TV on December 21st, 2018, Friday as guests. They were later targeted due to the opinions they shared during the show on democracy, polarisation and the local elections; with President Erdoğan himself threatening them with the words, “What’s necessary will be done in the judiciary. They will pay the price of this.” An investigation has been started against the two names with the allegation of “insulting the President and calling for a coup” and they were released with judicial measures by the court on duty after testifying.
