The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, alleging that he publicly insulted the court panel in a statement regarding the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality case. The prosecutor’s office announced that the investigation was initiated ex officio under the provisions of the Turkish Penal Code governing the crime of insult. In a statement made after the hearing, Özel had criticized the court panel and expressed his dissatisfaction with the trial process.
