Faruk Bildirici announced that he no longer works at Hürriyet Daily, where he has been working for the past 27 years. The journalist was the reader representative (ombudsman) at the newspaper for the past nine years and write articles criticising the newspaper in accordance with the warnings coming from the readers as well as his own observations. In his column last week, entitled, “There is no event but there is reply,” Bildirici criticised the news article published on Hürriyet Daily on February 21st with the headline, “Soylu replies to allegations of sexual harassment: ‘We will not allow police to be humiliated’.”
In his last column, Bildirici wrote, “I have always wanted for journalism to be the voice of those forced in silence, to defend the victims, to stand watch for public benefit; for journalism to never make concessions from independence, to never be a tool for groups of benefit. I’ve always wanted journalism to be a power that transmits the truth without deformation and approaches every issue and everyone with a critical perspective. I’ve always wanted for journalism to win. Perhaps it didn’t happen today but tomorrow, it definitely will…”
