Kadir Sakçı (43) lost his life after allegedly having been attacked with arms due to speaking in Kurdish in Hendek district of Sakarya on December 16th; his son Burhan Sakçı (16) was heavily injured. After the allegation that the murder was committed following the question, “Are you Kurdish?” Sakarya Governorate made a statement and claimed that “a perception is attempted to be created that the incident may have stemmed from a racial cause.” Reacting against the Governorate statement, People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu indicated that they are researching the incident and that it is an “obvious” hate murder. In his announcement on Twitter, Gergerlioğlu stated, “We’ve researched… A person curses after not being able to receive alcohol from the buffet; the young person next to him, working at a hair salon, says, ‘uncle, it’s a shame, don’t curse.’ The person then says, ‘don’t interfere, you Kurd’ and fires his gun. The father jumps in front of his son and dies, the son is injured. The hate is obvious!”
