The sentence given to arrested Hakkari Co-Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış was overturned by the 2nd Criminal Chamber of Van Regional Court of Appeals on the grounds that “the right to defense was restricted and party activities were considered as illegal organization activities”. The file was sent to the local court, but Akış was not released. Akış was detained and suspended from office on June 3, 2024 and a trustee was appointed in his place. He was sentenced to 19 years and 6 months in prison in a trial that has been ongoing since 2014.
