Following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the executives of the DİSK/Genel-İş İzmir Branch are being tried on charges of “insulting the President” for participating in the subsequent protests.
In the trial held at the Izmir 7th Criminal Court of First Instance, the defendant unionists stated that they had exercised their constitutional rights and had not used any insulting language during the protest.
Lawyer Ercan Demir stated that the audio recordings obtained by the police were obtained in violation of procedure, saying, “The audio recording violates the privacy of private life and therefore cannot be used as evidence.” The court decided to conduct an expert examination and postponed the hearing until February 5, 2026.
