On January 9, police intervened in a press statement made by youth organizations in Istanbul protesting attacks on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiya in Aleppo. During the intervention, 56 university students were detained. Six of the detained students were referred to the prosecutor’s office; the magistrate’s court issued arrest warrants for four students. It was stated that the intervention was carried out on the grounds of provocations that occurred during the protest.
