The European Union of Turkish Journalists (ATGB) issued a statement on the increasing pressure on press freedom and democratic rights in Turkey. The statement, signed by President Recai Aksu, protested RTÜK’s 10-day blackout of HALK TV and SÖZCÜ TV and the fines imposed on TELE1 and NOW TV.
The statement also criticized the arrests of journalists and the detention of CHP mayors. Citing the detention of Timur Soykan as an example, the statement said, “Journalism is not a crime!” ATGB demands restoration of the independence of justice and the rule of law
