Environmental activist Haluk Özsoy was sentenced to five months in prison for “insulting the Turkish nation” after the appeal court overturned his previous acquittal in a case stemming from a press statement he read at a rally on December 3, 2023.
In another case against Özsoy, he was acquitted in a lawsuit filed over a speech he made at the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Council.
Özsoy’s lawyer, Nuray Şahbudak, pointed out the importance of the acquittal, while CHP YDK member Remzi Kazmaz said that the environmental struggle was being pressured through the courts. Kazmaz said, “These sentences will not discourage us.”
