The verdict was announced in the moral compensation lawsuit filed against journalist Nevşin Mengü by former Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar. The court ruled that Mengü should pay 30 thousand TL for non-pecuniary damages against Akar’s demand of 100 thousand TL.
The lawsuit was filed after Mengü claimed that Akar had met with MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli and that some young lieutenants were close to the Zafer Party. Akar had demanded compensation on the grounds that his personal rights had been violated.
The court found Akar ‘partially right’. While Mengü’s lawyer argued that they acted within the framework of journalism, Akar’s lawyer stated that the statements were baseless and an attack on personal rights.
