Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant for journalist Şener Levent. It was reported that Levent’s prison sentences from the cases he was tried in absentia in Turkey have been finalized and that he must surrender within 10 days.
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office sent the notification through the TRNC judiciary based on the judicial assistance protocol signed between Turkey and the TRNC. Levent was asked to apply to the prosecutor’s office with his passport photo due to his 1-year prison sentence. Otherwise, he will be transferred from his current location to Ankara.
Levent had previously been sentenced to three separate prison sentences of 6 months and 2 times 1 year. “Tayyip Erdoğan’s fascism wants to include Cyprus in Turkey’s political arrests,” the European daily said.
The decision was seen as a continuation of the crackdown on freedom of expression and press freedom.
