Ankara 23rd Administrative Court issued a stay of execution on RTÜK’s 5-day broadcasting suspension imposed on TELE1. The court suspended the action without receiving RTÜK’s defense, as the decision was of a nature that would “cease to be effective upon implementation”. The penalty was imposed on the grounds of Merdan Yanardağ’s statements that “July 15 was an Islamist coup attempt”. RTÜK has the right to appeal against the decision within 7 days. The sentence was handed down on July 24, Press Freedom Day.
