Journalist Aziz Oruç’s sentence due to “committing a crime on behalf of an illegal organization without membership” was reversed at the Court of Cassation. Performing a folk dance accompanied by Kurdish music as well as his participation in the office opening events of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), events for the International Women’s Day on March 8 and “tree planting events” on behalf of an illegal organisation were cited among the evidence for the sentence.
Journalist Oruç had been prosecuted on the grounds of the demonstrations he attended in 2010 and 2011. 36 students, including Oruç, had been sentenced to 226 years of imprisonment in total as a result of their prosecution.
