16th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation reversed the decree against journalist-writer Ahmet Altan, who was sentenced to 10 years and six months of imprisonment due to “aiding an illegal organisation and against journalist Nazlı Ilıcak, who was sentenced to 8 years and nine months of imprisonment due to the same charge. The court issued a release decree for Altan, who has been arrested since September 2016. Ilıcak and Altan were accused of “sending subliminal messages” before the July 15 coup attempt on TV shows they participated in as well, and had been sentenced to heavy life imprisonment in the lawsuit filed against them at Istanbul 26th Assize Court due to “coup attempt.” In the re-prosecution after the reversal by the Court of Cassation, the two names have been convicted this time due to “willfully aiding and abetting an armed terrorist organisation.”
