The Constitutional Court unanimously ruled that the conviction of Şaban Sevinç, who was a Parliament member candidate from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Samsun at the 1 November 2015 General Elections due to the expression “court jester” used against the then-minister Suat Kılıç, was a “violation of freedom of expression”.
The decision will be sent to the Ankara 30th Criminal Court of First Instance with a request for a retrial. The local court had sentenced Sevinç to 4,700 TL of judicial fine on the charge of “publicly insulting a public official” and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
