Van Yüzüncü Yıl University lecturer and nartologist Balkar Selçuk Bağlar has been under arrest for a month due to his social media posts. Bağlar had been subjected to a lynch attempt on social media for opposing the claim that the Egyptian Pyramids were built by Turks, and responded to the insults with the words “nomadic thieves”. Following this post, an investigation was launched against him on charges of “publicly insulting the signs of state sovereignty” and “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.” He was arrested on July 11.
His lawyer Rojhat Levent Özgökçe stated that Bağlar’s remarks should be considered within the scope of freedom of expression and described the arrest as arbitrary and double standard. Academics call for solidarity
