Azerbaijani opposition politician and former member of parliament Gültekin Hacıbeyli was detained by police while visiting his son in Istanbul. Deportation proceedings were initiated against Hacıbeyli under the G-82 restriction code, which applies to “foreigners posing a threat to national security.” Hacıbeyli, who was detained on the night of November 29, was taken to the Arnavutköy Repatriation Center. Hacıbeyli stated that he was detained despite having a valid residence permit and before his three-month stay period had expired, and that he would be arrested on political grounds if sent to Azerbaijan. While his lawyers filed an appeal against the deportation decision, no official statement was made by the Turkish authorities.
