Pro-government ATV channel targeted the protests against the deforestation on Ida Mountains for mining gold, calling it the “Great Provocation.” The broadcast was made under the title, “Is there really a serious natural disaster, or is the matter something else?” The channel targeted Fox TV, Cumhuriyet and Sözcü Daily reporting the deforestation as well as nature activists, MPs and Çanakkale Municipal Assembly members fighting to stop the deforestation.
People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MP Oya Ersoy, who was also targeted by the channel, stated, “Together with the people of Çanakkale, we have been fighting against the deforestation on Ida Mountains for the gold mine project here since the beginning of the project in order to protect our nature, water and land against profit. Those defending their city, land and water are being declared provocateurs… We will not give up stating the truth against the foraging and deforestation.”
