Amnesty International has launched an urgent action campaign for Ahmad Aabo, a Syrian asylum seeker whose temporary protection status was revoked because he is HIV positive.
Aabo, who sought refuge in Turkey in 2012, was granted temporary protection status in 2017. However, after his HIV diagnosis in 2023, his status was revoked and he was taken under administrative detention in Arnavutköy Repatriation Center. Here, she was denied access to treatment and reportedly discriminated against.
Although he was released in October 2024, his temporary protection status was not reinstated. Unable to access free health care, Aabo’s access to medication was also restricted.
Amnesty stressed that HIV status cannot be grounds for deportation or revocation of status and called on Turkey to fulfill its international obligations. Organization launches signature campaign to be delivered to the Migration Administration
