KESK demonstrated in front of the Israeli Embassy Residence to protest the Israeli attacks on Palestine and the famine in Gaza. They wanted to leave black wreaths, teddy bears and rag dolls.
The police prevented the protest and offered a different area, but KESK members refused. Upon this, riot police set up a barricade and a brawl broke out. Atatürk Boulevard was closed to traffic for a while. Union members chanted slogans such as “Killer Israel, collaborator AKP” and “Open the barricade”. Citizens supported them by honking their horns. Upon insistence, wreaths and toys were allowed to be left.
KESK Co-Chair Ayfer Koçak said that Israel is using hunger as a weapon of war in Gaza and that targeting hospitals and aid centers is a “policy of genocide”. Koçak also criticized the US, the EU and Arab countries, saying that the AKP government is distracting the public by continuing trade with Israel.
