Ahmet Özer, the mayor of Esenyurt, was released from prison on July 14 in the case against him on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization”. However, he will remain in prison as he is being held in pre-trial detention in another case on charges of “bid rigging”. Özer argued that he was being tried on political grounds, while his lawyers said the allegations were baseless. CHP and DEM Party support Özer; public opinion associates the judicial process with political pressure.
